Q1: Is there a kit available to build a model of H.M.S. Detroit. Would be possible to obtain the plans for the replica H.M.S. Detroit?
A1: There are no kits for models of the ship just yet. The Architectural firm retains ownership and rights to the blue prints until the vessel is complete. Project H.M.S. Detroit will make model kits with plans available as soon as possible.
Q2: Who owns the ship? This is something that I assume potential donors and sponsors - would be interested in knowing.
A2: Project H.M.S. Detroit is a registered non-profit charity with out share capital. Therefore, the organization Project H.M.S. Detroit retains ownership of the vessel. A volunteer Board of Directors governs the organization. H.M.S. Detroit is Canada's Flag Ship; she is a source of pride for all Canadians. Internationally, she was at the center of an American naval victory that quickly became part of the folklore of the United States. Nationally, she was Canada's flagship in a major theatre of war in which Canadians discovered a stubborn Nationhood that successfully repulsed invasion. Provincially, she was the gallant, though ill-equipped and undermanned, front line of Upper Canada's defence, the loss of which led to an American occupation of Amherstburg, and a threat to the whole of what is now Southern Ontario. Regionally, she bore the name of what had been a British Fort but is today a major American city; Named in honour of the capture of Fort Detroit. Locally, she was the last product of Amherstburg's shipyard, one of the largest ships on Lake Erie to that date, the loss of which led to the subsequent occupation of the town of Amherstburg by U.S. forces.
Q3: Having sailed on the U.S. Brig Niagara as a volunteer, I was glad to learn that a replica of The H.M.S. Detroit was being built. Why is she being built with a steel hull?
